Diabetic Shoes: How to Choose Comfortable Footwear for Everyday Wear
A good fit should feel comfortable without being excessively loose.
Your shoes should:
- Provide enough toe room.
- Avoid pinching the sides of your feet.
- Avoid rubbing the heel or upper.
- Keep your heel reasonably secure.
- Provide sufficient width across the forefoot.
- Allow comfortable movement while walking.
- Avoid creating obvious pressure points.
If you have reduced sensation in your feet, do not rely entirely on how the shoes feel. Regularly inspect your feet for redness, blisters, cuts, swelling, or other changes. The ADA recommends daily foot checks because neuropathy can reduce the ability to feel injuries.
Diabetic Shoes for Wide and Swollen Feet
Some people need additional room because their feet are wide or their foot volume changes during the day.
In this situation, look for footwear that combines:
Wide fit: Provides more room across the forefoot.
Roomy toe box: Allows the toes to sit naturally.
Extra depth: Provides additional vertical space.
Adjustable closure: Makes it easier to customize the fit.
Flexible upper: Allows some natural movement around the foot.
