Diabetic Shoes: How to Choose Comfortable Footwear for Everyday Wear
The ADA's footwear guidance highlights materials that can stretch without creating unnecessary pressure or irritation.
Cushioning and Stability Matter
A comfortable diabetic shoe should also provide an appropriate balance of cushioning and stability.
If you spend much of your day walking or standing, a cushioned midsole can make the shoe more comfortable for everyday use. A stable outsole can provide a secure foundation while walking.
However, softness alone does not determine whether a shoe is suitable. Pay attention to the overall construction and how securely your foot sits inside the shoe.
For people with diabetes, the ADA recommends sturdy, comfortable shoes that fit properly.
When Should You Try on Diabetic Shoes?
The time of day can make a difference when choosing footwear.
Feet can become larger during the day, so the ADA recommends trying shoes later in the day when your feet are at their largest. It also recommends measuring both feet and choosing the larger size when appropriate.
Wear the type of socks you normally use and walk around in the shoes before deciding whether they fit comfortably.
Pay attention to any pressure points, rubbing, or areas that feel unusually tight.
