USMLE vs. PLAB

For students targeting US residency, Step 2 CK performance can be an important part of the overall application strategy.

PLAB 1

PLAB 1 is a three-hour written examination containing 180 single-best-answer questions. The questions are designed around the knowledge needed for safe medical practice in the UK.

PLAB 2

PLAB 2 evaluates practical clinical and communication skills through 16 scenarios. It is delivered at the GMC's clinical assessment centre in Manchester.

This makes PLAB particularly different from the USMLE because candidates must demonstrate clinical communication and practical skills in an examination setting.

Which Is More Difficult: USMLE or PLAB?

There is no universal answer to whether USMLE or PLAB is harder.

The difficulty depends on your medical foundation, preparation time, exam strategy, English communication skills, and career goals.

USMLE preparation can be academically demanding because Step 1 requires a strong understanding of foundational sciences, while Step 2 CK requires extensive clinical reasoning and application of knowledge.

PLAB has a different focus. Candidates need to understand UK clinical practice expectations and prepare for both written questions and practical clinical scenarios.

Therefore, comparing the two exams only by the number of questions or examination days can be misleading.
