Synthetic rubber strengthened during August, led by BR, as higher butadiene costs, tighter prompt availability, and producer price adjustments drove a sharp mid-to-late-month rise. BR briefly corrected when crude-linked sentiment weakened, but selected production cuts kept supply relatively firm. NBR also increased steadily from mid-August as higher feedstock replacement costs supported producer quotations, while demand from seals, hoses, footwear, cables, and other industrial applications remained largely requirement-driven.

Rubber Key Market Drivers

  • Weather disruption and lower inventories: Rainfall disrupted tapping in Southeast Asia and parts of China, limiting seasonal supply growth. Declining Qingdao inventories also reduced stock pressure, supporting natural-rubber prices. However, high raw-material costs kept tire producers focused on requirement-based purchasing, preventing a broad shortage-driven buying cycle.
  • Higher butadiene costs and tighter BR supply: Rising butadiene costs, maintenance-related supply constraints, and tighter spot availability supported higher BR prices. Selected high-cis BR plants also reduced production late in August. Despite a temporary crude-linked correction, elevated feedstock costs and lower expected output limited further declines.
  • NBR cost support vs. weak industrial demand: NBR prices rose gradually as higher feedstock costs pushed producer quotations higher. However, weak demand from automotive seals, hoses, gaskets, footwear, cables, rollers, and other applications limited the increase, while buyers continued requirement-based procurement.
  • Uneven tire demand and cautious inventories: Tire demand remained a key driver but varied by region. China saw modestly higher operating rates, although high raw-material costs and weaker shipments limited output growth. India maintained stronger demand and high utilization, while European replacement demand improved but original-equipment demand remained uneven. The U.S. market stayed softer, with August forecasts indicating lower 2026 shipments than 2025.
  • Localization, recycling, and supply-chain regulation: New tire-manufacturing projects in Egypt and Morocco are expected to support future regional rubber demand. Waste-tire export compliance in England also tightened in August, while European producers expanded recycled-material use. These developments had limited direct impact on August prices but influenced recycling economics, sourcing requirements, and longer-term rubber demand.
