I Lost the Weight. Now What? The GLP-1 Maintenance Questions Nobody Prepared Me For
The scale finally moved where I wanted it to. Then I realized losing the weight was only one part of the conversation.
Maintenance is more than keeping the scale steady
This is where I think the conversation gets too narrow.
If the only definition of successful maintenance is “the scale never moves,” almost everyone is going to feel like they're failing eventually.
A more useful maintenance plan considers the bigger picture.
That can include:
- nutrition that is adequate and sustainable
- enough protein and overall nutrient intake for individual needs
- regular physical activity that can realistically continue
- strength training when appropriate
- sleep and stress management
- awareness of appetite changes
- ongoing medical follow up
- a clear medication plan
- realistic expectations about normal weight fluctuation
The details will be different for different people.
There is no single maintenance routine that everyone with obesity should follow.
And there shouldn't be.
A useful way to think about maintenance:
Don't wait for a crisis to ask what changed. Pay attention to the smaller signals that tell you your routine may need attention.
That might be increased grazing.
