How to Write a Critical Literature Review for University Assignments
Using outdated research without justification
Older sources can be essential for theories, foundational studies and historical context. But don't rely on old evidence simply because it was easy to find.
Making claims that are broader than the evidence
If a study involved 100 students at one university, don't turn its finding into a claim about every university student.
Treating references as decoration
Every citation should have a purpose. Ask yourself why that source is there and what it contributes to the argument.
A Practical Final Check
Before submitting, read your literature review once without looking at the references.
Ask yourself:
Can I see an argument?
Then look at the citations.
Does each important claim have appropriate evidence?
Finally, look at the paragraphs individually.
Am I comparing sources, or am I simply moving from one author to another?
If your paragraphs repeatedly follow the pattern "Author A says..." followed by "Author B says...", stop and look for a theme connecting those sources.
That small change can make a surprisingly large difference.
Final Thoughts
A critical literature review isn't a competition to see who can find the most journal articles. It is an exercise in judgement.
You need to decide which sources matter, understand how they produced their findings, compare competing interpretations and explain what the evidence means when considered together.
The most useful question to keep in front of you is:
What does this source add to my understanding of the question, and how does that compare with the other evidence I've found?
If you can answer that throughout your review, you are already moving beyond description and towards genuine critical analysis.
