How to Write a Critical Literature Review for University Assignments
The second version makes your interpretation visible.
University guidance on literature reviews specifically advises students to maintain their own analytical voice while accurately representing the sources they use. (UCA LibGuides)
Reference Carefully
A strong analysis can still be weakened by poor referencing.
Follow the referencing style required by your university or department. In the UK, this may be Cite Them Right Harvard, APA, MHRA or another specified system.
For example, the Open University explains that Cite Them Right Harvard uses in-text citations alongside a corresponding reference list containing the full details of sources used. (Open University)
Most importantly, don't cite sources you haven't actually checked.
If you find an interesting claim in a secondary article, go back to the original study where possible. If you genuinely have not read the original, follow your institution's rules for secondary referencing rather than presenting it as though you did. (Open University)
What About AI Tools?
AI can be useful during the research process, but it shouldn't replace your judgement.
You can use it to brainstorm search terms, identify possible themes or help you think about questions to ask when reading a paper. But verify the actual research yourself.
This matters because an AI-generated summary can flatten important distinctions between studies or worse, provide a citation that doesn't support the claim being made.
The latest edition of Gary Thomas's literature-review guide explicitly addresses the use of AI tools for literature searching while still emphasising source assessment, screening and synthesis. (Sage Publications)
Your safest approach is simple: read the original source, understand it, then cite what it actually says.
For students who need additional support with an education-focused assignment, education assignment help may also be useful as a supplementary resource. The important point, however, is to keep the final academic argument grounded in sources you have personally checked and understood.
Common Mistakes That Lower the Quality of a Literature Review
Summarising every article separately
This produces an annotated bibliography rather than a connected critical discussion.
Using too many weak sources
Ten highly relevant academic papers are often more useful than thirty loosely related websites.
Criticising without evidence
Don't call a study "unreliable" unless you can explain the methodological or evidential reason.
Ignoring contradictory findings
Disagreement is often where the most interesting analysis begins.
