How Better Questions Can Transform Leadership and Decision Making

Every decision depends on the quality of the information available. When leaders act too quickly, they may respond to symptoms rather than causes.

A salesperson assumes the customer thinks the price is too high.

A project leader assumes everyone understands the timeline.

An executive assumes a process still works because it worked several years ago.

Each assumption may be correct, but none should automatically be treated as fact.

A good question tests the assumption before the leader builds a decision around it.

The Questioneer Approach to Leadership

Chiodo introduces a Signature Concept called the Questioneer. He describes the Questioneer as a person who knows the right question to ask at the right moment. The goal is not simply to ask more questions. The goal is to ask questions that move a conversation toward greater understanding (p. 73).

This skill is especially valuable for managers, executives, coaches, consultants, and team leaders. These roles often create pressure to appear certain. Some leaders believe that asking questions will make them look less capable.

In reality, thoughtful questions can demonstrate discipline.

A leader who asks, “What information would change our decision?” is not showing weakness. That leader is protecting the decision from incomplete thinking.

Similarly, asking, “What risk are we underestimating?” can reveal concerns that employees may otherwise hesitate to raise.

Strong leadership questions create room for information that authority alone cannot provide.
