Electricity Supply
The supply portion represents the electricity itself—the energy purchased for consumption.
Eligible ComEd customers may have the option to obtain electricity supply from:
- ComEd's utility supply service
- An alternative retail electric supplier
- A residential real-time pricing program
The availability of particular offers depends on the customer's eligibility and location.
Electricity Delivery
Delivery is different.
ComEd remains the delivery utility even when a customer chooses another electricity supplier. This means changing suppliers does not involve changing the wires, distribution system, or utility responsible for outages.
The Illinois Commerce Commission specifically notes that customers continue to contact their electric utility for outages and service issues regardless of which company supplies their electricity.
Why the Difference Matters
A common mistake is comparing two electricity plans as though the advertised supply rate represents the entire electricity bill.
It usually does not.
