Can Your Home Qualify For The Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) can reduce the cost of installing an eligible low-carbon heating system, but not every UK property qualifies.

A property cannot normally receive BUS funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler where government funding has already been provided towards the purchase or installation of that same low-carbon heating system. Funding through ECO for the same heating installation can also create an exclusion.

On the other hand, receiving support for an unrelated energy-efficiency measure does not automatically rule out BUS.

If you have previously received public funding, tell your installer exactly what the funding was for. They can then assess whether it affects the proposed application.

Does The Heat Pump Have To Meet Technical Standards?

Yes.

Even if the property itself qualifies, the proposed heat pump must also meet the scheme's technical requirements.

For example, eligible air-to-water and ground source heat pumps must have a minimum seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) of 2.8. The system must also be correctly sized to meet the property's full space-heating requirements and satisfy the relevant requirements for heating and hot water.

This is why the installer needs to assess the property before selecting the equipment.

A product appearing on Ofgem's Product Eligibility List does not by itself guarantee that the complete installation qualifies for BUS.

Does The Installer Need To Be MCS Certified?

Yes.

The installation must be carried out and commissioned by an appropriately MCS-certified installer for the relevant technology.

The financial side of the business also deserves careful planning before the company begins serving its first patients.
