Can Your Home Qualify For The Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) can reduce the cost of installing an eligible low-carbon heating system, but not every UK property qualifies.
Does Your Home Need An EPC?
An Energy Performance Certificate can form part of the application process.
For retrofit installations, the installer generally provides a valid EPC number when submitting the BUS application. Where a property does not have a valid EPC, alternative evidence may be accepted in accordance with the scheme rules.
Having an EPC does not, by itself, guarantee eligibility. It is one piece of information used when assessing the property.
Does Your Home Need To Be Well Insulated?
There is a common misconception that every home must have extensive insulation upgrades before it can receive BUS funding.
That is not the basic eligibility rule. Previous funding for energy-efficiency measures such as insulation does not automatically prevent you from receiving BUS support.
That said, insulation still matters when considering whether a heat pump is appropriate.
A heat pump generally works most effectively when the home's heat loss has been properly assessed and the system is designed around the building's actual requirements. An installer may therefore recommend improvements or explain how the existing insulation affects the proposed system.
The distinction is important: insulation and BUS eligibility are not the same question.
Has Your Home Already Received Government Funding?
Previous funding can affect eligibility, but it depends on what the funding paid for.
