Can Parasites Cause Teeth Grinding? What the Evidence Really Shows

Pinworms → nighttime discomfort → disturbed sleep → increased or noticeable grinding

However, a plausible mechanism is not the same as proven causation.

More research is needed before this pathway can be considered established.

What Does Research Say About Parasites and Bruxism?

Researchers have examined this question for decades, particularly in children.

Studies Reporting an Association

Some studies have observed higher rates of intestinal parasites among children with bruxism.

This has led researchers to consider several possible explanations involving:

  • Sleep disruption
  • Nervous-system stimulation
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Immune responses
  • Behavioral changes

More recent research has also continued investigating associations between intestinal parasitic infections and oral-health or bruxism-related outcomes.

Studies Finding No Clear Relationship

Other research has not reproduced the association.

One study comparing children with bruxism and controls found no significant relationship between intestinal parasitic infection and teeth grinding.

Another investigation specifically examining Enterobius vermicularis concluded that infection could not be considered a demonstrated cause of bruxism in children.

What Does That Mean?

The evidence should currently be described as:

mixed and inconclusive.

There may be an association in certain populations, but research has not established parasites as a major universal cause of bruxism.

That wording is much more scientifically accurate than saying:

“Grinding your teeth means you have worms.”

What Are the More Common Causes of Teeth Grinding?

Before assuming parasites, consider more established bruxism risk factors.

According to the NHS teeth-grinding guidance, recognized associations include stress and anxiety, sleep problems, certain medications, smoking, alcohol and caffeine.
