Can Parasites Cause Teeth Grinding? What the Evidence Really Shows

Two conditions occurring together can mean:

  1. One condition causes the other.
  2. A third factor contributes to both.
  3. They happen together by coincidence.

Research involving parasites and bruxism has produced all three possibilities.

Some pediatric studies have found a higher frequency of parasites among children who grind their teeth.

Other studies have found no statistically significant relationship.

A study examining intestinal parasites and childhood bruxism concluded that parasite infection was not significantly associated with grinding in the population studied.

Earlier research also found that symptoms traditionally blamed on pinworms—including teeth grinding—occurred at similar rates among infected and uninfected children.

Therefore, teeth grinding cannot function as a parasite diagnostic test.

What About Pinworms and Teeth Grinding?

Pinworm is the parasite most frequently connected with this question.

Pinworm infection is caused by Enterobius vermicularis, a small intestinal worm.

The classic symptom is itching around the anus, particularly at night.

Female worms travel to the skin surrounding the anus to deposit eggs, which can cause intense nighttime itching and disturbed sleep.

The CDC's Enterobiasis information lists nighttime itching as the characteristic symptom and notes that other possible symptoms can include insomnia, irritability, abdominal discomfort and teeth grinding.

Mayo Clinic's pinworm guidance similarly lists teeth grinding among symptoms that may occur with pinworm infection.

That does not mean teeth grinding automatically indicates pinworms.

It simply means some infected individuals have reported grinding.

Why Might Pinworms Affect Sleep?

One plausible explanation does not require parasites to directly control the jaw muscles.

Instead, consider what happens during symptomatic pinworm infection.

A child may experience:

  • Intense nighttime itching
  • Frequent waking
  • Restless sleep
  • Irritability
  • Abdominal discomfort

Sleep disruption itself may potentially make grinding episodes more noticeable or frequent.

This provides a plausible indirect pathway:
