What Is DME Experience? Understanding Durable Medical Equipment Experience in Healthcare

DME experience can involve everything from verifying insurance eligibility and processing referrals to managing inventory, submitting claims, handling denials, coordinating deliveries, and supporting patients throughout the equipment lifecycle.

DME Experience and Denial Management

Denial management is an important part of DME operations.

A denied claim does not necessarily mean that the equipment was not medically necessary or that the provider cannot receive reimbursement. The reason may be a missing document, incorrect information, coding problem, authorization issue, eligibility problem, or another payer requirement.

Experienced DME teams learn to distinguish different denial patterns.

Instead of simply resubmitting every denied claim, they investigate why the claim failed.

That means looking at:

  • The payer's explanation.
  • The original claim.
  • Patient eligibility.
  • Authorization records.
  • Supporting documentation.
  • Coding.
  • Dates of service.
  • Previous payer communications.

Over time, denial data can also reveal process weaknesses. If similar claims repeatedly fail for the same reason, the problem may be occurring upstream in intake, documentation, authorization, or billing.

DME Experience and Inventory Management

DME experience is not limited to billing and administration.

Inventory management is equally important.

DME providers may manage large inventories across warehouses, locations, delivery vehicles, and service departments. Some equipment may have serial numbers, lot numbers, warranty information, or maintenance requirements.
