What Foods Should You Avoid With Braces?

Learn which foods to avoid with braces, including hard, sticky and sugary options, plus simple tips for protecting your braces and maintaining good oral health.

Tough meat can be challenging to eat with braces because it often requires considerable chewing force. Steak, ribs and meat attached to bones may be difficult to manage safely. Biting directly into meat can place pressure on the brackets, particularly those located towards the front of the mouth.

Instead, choose tender cuts of meat and cut them into small pieces before eating. Shredded chicken, soft fish, minced meat and slow cooked meat can generally be easier to manage. Removing meat from bones before eating can also reduce the temptation to bite directly into hard areas.

The same principle applies to other foods that require strong chewing. If you need to use considerable force to bite through something, it may not be the best choice while wearing braces. Choosing softer alternatives can make meals more comfortable and reduce unnecessary pressure on your orthodontic appliances.

Foods That Can Get Stuck Around Braces

Certain foods are not necessarily hard enough to break a bracket but can easily become trapped around orthodontic appliances. Leafy vegetables, fibrous fruits, shredded meat, popcorn and some types of bread can become caught between brackets and wires.

Food trapped around braces can be difficult to remove without careful cleaning. If it remains in place for an extended period, bacteria can feed on food particles and contribute to plaque formation. This can increase the risk of cavities, gum irritation and unpleasant breath.

You can reduce this problem by cutting food into manageable pieces and chewing slowly. Drinking water after meals can help remove loose food particles, although water should not replace brushing and other recommended oral hygiene practices.

Sugary Foods and Drinks Need Extra Attention

Sugary foods do not necessarily damage braces directly, but they can increase the risk of tooth decay. Brackets and wires create additional surfaces where plaque and food particles can accumulate. This means maintaining good oral hygiene becomes particularly important during orthodontic treatment.

Soft drinks, sweetened juices, energy drinks, lollies, biscuits, cakes and other sugary products should be limited. Frequent consumption of sugary drinks can expose the teeth to sugar repeatedly throughout the day, making it more difficult to maintain healthy enamel.

Water is generally a better choice between meals. If you have a sugary food or drink, maintaining your usual oral hygiene routine can help reduce the amount of sugar and plaque remaining around the teeth. Your dentist may also recommend additional cleaning methods depending on your braces and individual oral health needs.
