What Fees Should You Check Before Choosing a Gold Custodian?
5. Purchase and Sale Transaction Fees
Buying or selling metals through a retirement account may involve transaction-related charges. These may be assessed by the custodian, dealer, or another service provider.
Review the account documents for fees associated with:
- Processing purchases.
- Processing sales or liquidations.
- Handling multiple transactions.
- Wiring funds to or from the account.
- Processing checks or other payment methods.
Transaction fees may be charged per order, per transaction, or according to another schedule. Ask how the charges are calculated and whether they apply to both purchases and sales.
Also distinguish custodian transaction fees from the price of the metal itself. Dealer markups and the difference between a purchase price and a resale price are separate costs that can affect the overall economics of holding physical gold.
6. Transfer, Distribution, and Account Closure Fees
Moving an IRA or taking a distribution may trigger charges that are not obvious when an account is first opened.
A custodian may charge for transferring assets to another institution, processing a distribution, arranging shipment of physical metals, or closing the account.
Before opening an account, review the terms for:
- IRA-to-IRA transfers.
- Account termination.
- Cash distributions.
- In-kind distributions of physical metals.
- Shipping, handling, and delivery.
- Additional paperwork or processing.
Understanding these costs in advance can help you evaluate the flexibility of the account if your circumstances change.
7. How to Calculate the Total Cost
Comparing only the annual administration fee can give an incomplete picture. Instead, estimate the total cost using the charges quoted by each provider.
Use this formula:
Estimated first-year cost = Setup fee + Annual administration fee + Storage fee + Insurance fee + Expected transaction fees
For a longer-term comparison, include recurring charges and any anticipated transfers or distributions:
Estimated multi-year cost = Initial fees + (Annual recurring fees × Number of years) + Expected additional fees
Use the same account value, holding period, and transaction assumptions when comparing custodians. This makes it easier to see how different fee structures affect the overall cost.
For example, enter each provider's actual written fees into the formula rather than relying on promotional descriptions. If a charge is unclear, leave it unestimated until you obtain clarification.
8. Red Flags in a Custodian's Fee Schedule
A fee schedule should explain what you will pay and when. Be cautious if a provider:
- Will not provide a complete written fee schedule.
- Uses vague descriptions such as "standard administrative charges" without defining them.
- Cannot clarify whether storage and insurance are included.
- Advertises a low introductory fee without explaining future charges.
- Makes transfer or account-closure costs difficult to determine.
- Provides inconsistent fee information across its documents.
A custodian's role is not necessarily to investigate or endorse every investment held in a self-directed IRA. Verify the custodian's legitimacy independently and understand which responsibilities it accepts.
