What Factors Can Affect the Number of Embryos Created During IVF?

Learn which factors affect embryo numbers during IVF, including age, ovarian reserve, egg and sperm quality, fertilization, and so on.

The number of eggs retrieved can be influenced by ovarian reserve, age, medication protocols, individual response to stimulation, and other biological factors.

The goal of ovarian stimulation is not simply to obtain the highest possible number of eggs. Fertility specialists consider the patient's circumstances when determining an appropriate treatment approach.

4. Egg Quality

Egg quality is another important factor in embryo development. It cannot be accurately measured through a single routine test, but age is strongly associated with changes in reproductive potential and oocyte quality.

An egg needs to successfully support fertilization and the early stages of embryo development. Some eggs may not have the biological capacity to continue developing, which can reduce the number of embryos available later in the IVF process.

Egg quality should also be distinguished from ovarian reserve. Ovarian reserve mainly relates to the estimated quantity of remaining eggs, while egg quality concerns the developmental potential of individual eggs.

Because these factors are different, a person with a favorable ovarian reserve result may still experience embryo attrition during treatment.

5. Sperm Quality and Male Fertility Factors

Sperm factors can also affect fertilization and, in some circumstances, embryo development. A semen analysis commonly evaluates characteristics such as sperm concentration, motility, and morphology.

Even when semen parameters fall within expected ranges, successful fertilization is not guaranteed. Fertilization depends on interactions between the egg and sperm, along with other biological processes.

Male reproductive factors can therefore be relevant when fewer eggs fertilize or when embryo development does not progress as expected. Depending on the circumstances, additional testing or fertility evaluation may be recommended.

IVF treatment plans may also include different laboratory fertilization techniques based on the fertility team's assessment.
