What Do AI Assurance Services Include? A Buyer’s Guide
Sooner or later, someone will ask your team a simple question: can we prove our AI works the way we say it does? It might come from your CEO, a large customer, or a regulator. Your team may know how to test software, but proving that an AI system is accurate, fair, and secure takes a different kind of work.
That's the job of AI assurance services. The trouble is that the term covers a lot of ground, and two providers can mean very different things by it.
This guide explains what AI assurance is, the core services most providers offer, and what you should receive at the end. It also shows how to scope your first engagement so you pay for the work you actually need.
What AI Assurance Means and How It Differs From Regular Testing
Testing Checks Behavior, Assurance Builds Evidence
Software testing asks whether a system works. AI assurance asks a bigger question: can other people trust that it works, and can you show them why? The UK government's guidance on AI assurance describes it as measuring, evaluating, and communicating how trustworthy an AI system is.
That last part, communicating, is what sets assurance apart. It produces evidence that leaders, customers, auditors, and regulators can review, not just a pass or fail result for your engineers.
Why AI Needs a Different Approach
Traditional software usually follows fixed rules, so the same input gives the same output. AI systems learn patterns from data, and that creates new kinds of risk:
- The same question can get different answers at different times.
- Results depend heavily on the data the model learned from.
- Performance can slip over time as real-world data changes.
- New problems appear, such as biased results, made-up answers, and attacks that trick the AI with carefully written input.
Regular testing still matters, but on its own it doesn't cover all of this.
The Core Services Most Providers Offer
Most AI assurance services fall into five areas. A good provider tailors the mix to your system and its risks, so you may not need all five at once.
Model and Output Evaluation
This is the foundation. The provider builds test sets that reflect how your AI will really be used, then measures how often it gets things right. For a generative AI tool, that includes checking for made-up answers, where the AI states something false with confidence.
Good evaluation also covers edge cases: unusual inputs, missing information, and questions the AI shouldn't answer at all. The goal is a clear picture of where the system works well and where it doesn't.
Bias and Fairness Testing
Bias testing checks whether the AI's results differ unfairly across groups of people, such as by age, gender, or ethnicity. It matters most when AI shapes decisions about people, like hiring, lending, or insurance.
In some places, it's also a legal requirement. In New York City, for example, employers using certain automated hiring tools must have them audited for bias by an independent auditor.
Security Testing and Red Teaming
AI systems face attacks that traditional security testing wasn't built for. In a prompt injection attack, someone writes input designed to trick the AI into ignoring its instructions, leaking data, or taking actions it shouldn't. Prompt injection sits at the top of the OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications, a widely used list of the biggest security risks for apps built on large language models.
Red teaming means testers act like attackers and try to make the AI misbehave on purpose. It finds weak spots before real attackers or curious users do.
Data Quality Reviews
An AI system is only as good as its data. Data reviews check whether the data used to train or feed the model is accurate, complete, current, and right for the job. They also check whether sensitive data is handled properly.
