Vascular Access for Dialysis
Vascular access is a specially created or placed pathway that allows healthcare professionals to access the bloodstream during haemodialysis. Since dialysis usually requires repeated access to the blood vessels, the access needs to provide adequate blood flow while also remaining functional and safe over time.
The procedure and access location vary from person to person. Previous vascular procedures, diabetes, vascular disease, age, and the condition of the veins can all influence the choice.
When Should Vascular Access Be Planned?
Vascular access should ideally be considered before haemodialysis becomes urgently necessary. Early planning provides time to assess the blood vessels, create the access, allow it to mature where necessary, and address any problems before regular dialysis begins.
This is particularly important for an AV fistula because it generally requires a period of maturation before it can be cannulated reliably.
If a patient needs urgent dialysis before permanent access is ready, a temporary or tunneled dialysis catheter may be used depending on the clinical situation. The goal is to transition to an appropriate longer-term access when possible.
What Are the Benefits of a Well-Functioning Vascular Access?
A properly functioning vascular access can help provide consistent blood flow during haemodialysis. It may also reduce interruptions to treatment and lower the risk of access-related complications.
Potential benefits include:
- Reliable access to the bloodstream
- Adequate blood flow for dialysis
- Fewer interruptions during treatment
- Lower infection risk with suitable AV access compared with long-term catheter use
- Reduced need for repeated emergency access procedures
- Better support for long-term dialysis planning
The access must be regularly monitored because problems can develop even when there are no obvious symptoms initially.
Possible Complications of Dialysis Vascular Access
Although vascular access is essential for haemodialysis, complications can occur. These depend on the type of access and the patient's health.
