Understanding Scan-Related Anxiety During the Cancer Journey
Explore why cancer scans can trigger fear and uncertainty, how scanxiety develops, and how patients can better understand cancer scan anxiety.
Anxiety does not exist only as a thought.
Fear and uncertainty can activate the body's stress response. A person may notice a racing heart, muscle tension, restlessness, sweating, difficulty sleeping, or problems concentrating.
These physical responses can then reinforce anxious thoughts.
For example, someone waiting for a scan may notice their heart racing and become more worried. That worry can increase physiological arousal, creating a cycle:
Uncertainty → threat-related thoughts → physiological arousal → increased awareness of symptoms → more worry
Understanding this cycle can help patients recognise that physical sensations accompanying scanxiety do not necessarily indicate a change in their cancer.
Why Scanxiety Deserves Attention in Cancer Care
Cancer treatment focuses heavily on detecting and treating disease. But the patient's experience includes more than tumour measurements.
Anxiety can occur at diagnosis, during treatment, around investigations, while waiting for results, and during survivorship. These periods can also overlap with important clinical decisions.
This broader view has increased interest in understanding anxiety within cancer care rather than treating it as an unrelated psychological issue.
Dr. Chirag Jain's work approaches cancer-related anxiety from this perspective. His work in Onco-Anxiology focuses on anxiety across the cancer journey and examines its relationship with physiological changes in the nervous system.
