Tooth Extraction Before Dental Implants: How Long Should You Wait?
Wondering how long to wait after tooth extraction in Burbank before getting a dental implant? Real timelines, healing tips, and when bone grafts matter.
Most people who come in for tooth extraction in Burbank ask me the same thing before they’ve even left the chair. When can I get the implant? I wish I could give one number and be done with it. I can’t. Some patients are ready in two months, some need closer to eight, and a few wait a lot longer than that. The reason isn’t mysterious. It’s mostly about bone, and bone doesn’t care about your schedule, your wedding, or that work trip you’ve got booked.
What Your Mouth Is Doing After the Tooth Is Gone
First the socket fills with a blood clot. Then gum tissue creeps over the top, usually inside a few weeks, and the spot looks closed up and fine. This is where people get fooled. Under that nice pink surface the bone is still rebuilding itself, slowly, and it keeps at it for months. An implant is basically a small titanium post that has to fuse with that bone. If the bone isn’t ready, the post has nothing solid to hold onto. Simple as that.

The Usual Waiting Time
For a normal, healthy extraction with no infection, three to six months is the common window. Some dentists place the implant earlier, around six to eight weeks, when the gum has closed but the bone is still fresh. And yes, same-day placement exists too. It works for certain teeth in certain mouths, not yours automatically. We look at the X-ray and a 3D scan first, then decide on timing. Never the other way around. Anyone promising you a date before seeing your imaging is guessing.
When You Need a Bone Graft
Infected teeth, gum disease, a tooth that snapped off below the gumline, any of these can leave the bone thin or damaged. Sometimes we put graft material into the socket right when the tooth comes out, so the bone doesn’t just cave in on itself. Good idea, but it adds time. Four to six more months, usually. People groan at this, and fair enough. But I’ve seen what happens when someone skips it. The implant goes into weak bone, it gets loose, and now they’re paying twice and starting over.
Front Teeth, Molars and the Upper Jaw Aren’t the Same
When a friend says “I got mine in eight weeks,” it doesn’t tell you much. Where the tooth sat matters a lot. Front teeth need careful planning because the gum shape decides whether the finished tooth looks natural or kind of fake. Molars take a beating every time you chew, so that bone has to be dense. Upper back teeth sit right under the sinus, and sometimes the sinus floor needs to be lifted a little before anything goes in. Different spot, different bone, different timeline.
Why a Family Dentist in Burbank Helps Here
If the same office pulls the tooth and plans the implant, you skip a lot of hassle. A family dentist in Burbank already knows your medical history, your gums, the medications you take, how you healed last time. Nothing gets lost between two offices. Nobody is reading your chart for the first time on the morning of surgery. One team keeps an eye on the whole thing from start to finish, and that saves weeks of back and forth, phone calls, repeated X-rays, all of it.
Stuff That Slows Healing Down
Smoking is the worst offender. It chokes the blood supply to the area and the socket heals slowly and badly. Diabetes that isn’t under control does something similar. Some medications matter too, especially certain bone drugs, so tell us everything you take, even the supplements. Then there’s the dumb stuff, like poking the site with your tongue or ignoring the rinse instructions. Dry socket is real and it hurts. Basic dental care at home matters more than people expect. Brush gently, keep the area clean, leave the clot alone.
What Happens While You Wait
Waiting isn’t the same as doing nothing. We check the site a couple of times to make sure it’s closing the way it should. If the gap shows when you smile, we can make a temporary tooth, either a small removable one or something bonded to the teeth next to it, so you’re not hiding your mouth in meetings. Chew on the other side for a while. Soft food first, nothing crunchy near the spot. Pretty simple stuff, though people usually forget by week two and then call us worried.

What to Expect During the Waiting Period
Waiting doesn’t mean doing nothing. You’ll probably have a check-up or two so we can make sure the site is healing properly. Sometimes we take a 3D scan to measure the bone before deciding on a date. If the gap is in a visible spot, there are temporary options, like a removable flipper or a bonded tooth, so you’re not walking around self-conscious. Eating is fine too, just chew on the other side for a bit, stick to softer foods early on, and skip anything crunchy near the site.
Signs You’re Ready, and Signs You’re Not
Ready looks like this: gum fully closed, no swelling, no tenderness, and a scan showing enough solid bone. Not ready looks like lingering soreness, a bad taste, drainage, or bone that still looks thin on the image. If it’s the second one, we wait. I know that’s annoying to hear, I really do. But a few extra weeks costs way less than a failed implant and doing the whole thing again from scratch.
