Tooth Decay: Stages, Treatment Options and Ways to Prevent It

Tooth Decay: Stages, Treatment Options and Ways to Prevent It

4. Pulp Damage

The pulp is the innermost part of the tooth and contains nerves and blood vessels. When decay reaches the pulp, it can cause inflammation or infection.

Symptoms may include severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity, pain while biting, or pain that occurs without an obvious trigger. Treatment should not be delayed at this stage.

5. Dental Abscess

Untreated infection can lead to a dental abscess. An abscess is a collection of pus caused by infection.

It may cause severe pain, swelling of the gums or face, fever, bad taste in the mouth, or difficulty chewing. A dental abscess requires prompt professional evaluation and treatment.

Tooth Decay Treatment Options

Treatment for tooth decay depends on how much of the tooth has been affected. A dentist will examine the tooth and may recommend dental X-rays when needed before deciding on an appropriate treatment.

Fluoride Treatment

Early enamel changes may sometimes be managed with fluoride. Fluoride helps strengthen enamel and can support the remineralisation process before a permanent cavity develops.

Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are commonly used when a cavity has formed but the damage has not reached the deeper part of the tooth. The dentist removes the decayed portion and fills the cleaned area with a suitable dental material.

Dr. Vishwas Bhatia, Dentist in Gurgaon at Miracles Healthcare, says, “Timely fillings can prevent decay from spreading deeper and help preserve the natural tooth.”

Dental Crowns

If a large portion of the tooth has been weakened or damaged, a dental crown may be recommended. A crown covers the affected tooth and helps restore its shape, strength, and function.

Root Canal Treatment

When tooth decay reaches the pulp and causes infection or inflammation, root canal treatment may be required. During this procedure, the infected or damaged tissue inside the tooth is removed, and the area is cleaned and sealed.

The purpose of root canal treatment is to treat the infection while preserving the natural tooth whenever possible.

Tooth Extraction

If a tooth is severely damaged and cannot be restored, extraction may be necessary. Your dentist can discuss suitable options for replacing the missing tooth after extraction if required.

Can Tooth Decay Be Prevented?

In many cases, tooth decay can be prevented or its risk significantly reduced through good oral hygiene and healthy daily habits.

Brush your teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner. Pay attention to the back teeth and other areas that may be difficult to reach.

Limit sweets, sugary drinks, and frequent snacking. Each time you consume sugary or starchy foods, bacteria may produce acids that attack your teeth. Reducing how frequently you snack can therefore help reduce repeated acid exposure.
