The Best Birthday Present Ideas a Parent Can Buy for a Teenage Boy

Finding the right birthday present for a teenage boy can be tricky, as they explore their own unique interests. Read our guide to be inspired today.

As parents, we’ve all been there, and if you haven’t, you will be. Your teenager's birthday is rolling around, and it’s now time to get them something they’ll like. The biggest problem here is that most teenagers don’t seem to like anything, really. Especially boys. And that’s who we’ll be focusing on in this article.

Gone are the days when you could fill a trolley with colourful toys, buy a couple of birthday cards from Snapfish with their favourite superheroes and footballers on the front and give yourself a pat on the back. Now, it’s hard to tell exactly what goes on in their head and what they actually like. The bad news is that the presents are bound to get more expensive for older kids; in today’s world, that’s fairly unavoidable.

I’m putting together a list of the very best birthday presents that a teenage boy could want, so the price point here is somewhere in the £100 - £600 range, though with second-hand options available at more affordable prices.

A Guitar

This is more a present for the musically inclined boy. Not all of them are, but if your teenage boy takes his music seriously, then getting him a guitar will give him the chance to connect more closely to the music he loves, while also giving him a creative outlet and the chance to pickup a lifelong skill and passion. Again, this might not be right for every boy out there, but for the right boy, it’s the perfect gift. Now, it’s important to know upfront that you’ll have a couple of main options, as far as guitar types go.

An Acoustic Guitar

Most guitarists learn on an acoustic guitar first. That’s because they’re generally more accessible and home-friendly (not to mention neighbour-friendly). They’re great for learners who want to cut their teeth on basic chord shapes, strumming actions and even finger picking. Their resonant sounds are also more forgiving when mistakes are made. What’s more, they’re generally lower maintenance. Besides changing the strings now and then, most first guitarists see no particular reason to make modifications to these guitars.

The acoustic guitar is also surprisingly versatile. Folk music and a lot of pop songs obviously use acoustic guitars to begin with, but you might be surprised by just how good a lot of acoustic variations of piano- or electric guitar-driven songs sound.

An Electric Guitar

So an electric guitar isn’t typically where most guitarists start out, but in many ways, it’s more forgiving than its acoustic brother. Oftentimes, the strings are easier to press down, making it easier at first to play the instrument for longer periods of time without hurting the fingers. The electric guitar is also, by far and away in my opinion, the more versatile instrument. It can play a wider variety of sounds with the right amplifier and pedals equipped, and it’s always satisfying when you can play one of your favourite songs and have it sound exactly like the track, rather than an acoustic rendition of it.

There’s also the ‘cool’ factor. When a teenage boy rips off the wrapping paper to find an electric guitar, he’ll probably be more excited than he would be if it was an acoustic guitar. The only issues here are the cost and the noise factor. When you’re buying an electric guitar, you also need to buy an amplifier and a cable to connect it to the guitar, a strap, guitar picks, and probably a capo, too. This balloons the overall cost, though there are some more affordable package deals that include a guitar and amp for around £100 that are available at bigger retailers.

A Video Game Console

I think we can all agree that, generally speaking, most teenage boys enjoy their games, while most parents don’t have any idea where to begin when it comes to games. So, I’m going to take this opportunity to tell you a bit more about each video game console.

A Nintendo Switch 2

The Switch 2 is the successor to Nintendo’s extremely popular Switch console. What makes it different to the other consoles we’re going to discuss here is that it’s playable as both a portable handheld device and a traditional console that’s played on a TV. The Switch 2 doesn’t quite have the graphics capabilities of the next two consoles, but what it lacks in firepower, it makes up for with exclusives.

The Switch 2 is the only platform you can buy and play some of the biggest video game franchises, like Mario, Pokémon, and Zelda – just to name a few. If your teenage boy is a big fan of those, then this is a no-brainer.

A PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 is Sony’s flagship console. This latest generation of PlayStation is better suited to players who value mainstream AAA titles, like Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and Elden Ring. AAA games, put simply, are those big-budget, blockbuster games that push the envelope when it comes to graphics and frame rates, while also delivering on innovative gameplay mechanics and detailed story worlds.

The PlayStation also has some exclusives of its own, like Marvel’s Spider-Man and Wolverine games, as well as critically acclaimed series like The Last of Us and Horizon.

An Xbox Series X

In many ways, the Xbox Series X does many of the same things that a PlayStation 5 can do. It focuses on providing the very best graphical performance on a home console, with most AAA games being released on Xbox at the exact same time as PlayStation. The Xbox also has its own notable exclusives, like the Halo and Gears of War series.

It is worth noting that Xbox has its own value proposition in the form of Xbox Game Pass, which is a monthly subscription with a few different tiers that allow users to access the latest releases for no extra charge. PlayStation has a similar subscription model, PlayStation Plus, but its library is more limited and has fewer day-one releases.
