STI Testing After Unprotected Sex: When to Go
Learn when to get STI testing after unprotected sex, which tests may be needed, and why testing timing can affect accurate results.
This means there are two important questions:
“Should I be tested now?”
and
“Do I need another test later?”
If the exposure was recent, a healthcare provider can help determine which tests make sense now and whether follow-up testing should be considered.
Why Does STI Testing Timing Matter?
STI tests look for evidence of an infection. Depending on the infection and test, there may be a period after exposure when the infection is present but the test cannot reliably detect it.
This is sometimes called a window period.
Testing too early can therefore produce a negative result that does not necessarily rule out a recent infection.
That does not mean you should always wait to seek care. If you have symptoms, know that a partner has an STI, or have a specific concern about a recent exposure, contact a healthcare professional promptly.
Your provider can determine whether testing now, testing later, or both may be appropriate.
