Smart Lock Installation in Perth: A Complete Homeowner Guide

Smart Lock Installation in Perth: A Complete Homeowner Guide

Good smart lock installation starts with the door, not the gadget. Measure the backset, check the bore hole,

Door thickness usually falls between 35 mm and 44 mm. Thicker custom doors need longer screws or an extension kit. The main bore hole runs about 54 mm across on standard doors. An off-centre or odd-shaped hole stops the lock sitting flat.

Your existing hardware matters too. A deadbolt, a cylindrical latch, a mortice body and a multipoint system all need different answers. Euro cylinder doors look ordinary from the street and still refuse a standard keyless entry lock.

What Smart Lock Installation Actually Involves

Retrofit models need less than people expect. A Phillips head screwdriver handles most of the job, plus a small Allen key for set screws.

Start by loosening the interior screws. Both halves of the old lock slide free once those screws clear. Unscrew the faceplate and pull the latch out of the door edge.

Fitting the new hardware runs the same path in reverse. Slide the latch into the edge bore and sit the faceplate flush with the timber. Retract the latch by hand, then feed the exterior cable or spindle through the bore hole. Join the interior assembly last and keep screw pressure even.

Firm and even beats tight. Cranking screws down to hide a panel gap twists the lock body and shortens its life.

Installing a Smart Door Lock Without the Usual Mistakes

The app setup trips up as many people as the hardware. Download the lock's app, then pair by scanning the QR code or pressing the pairing button. Keep your phone close and your Wi-Fi steady while it connects.

Set up access properly once it pairs. Give each family member a PIN or fingerprint of their own. Temporary codes suit cleaners, tradies and house guests, and you can cancel them in seconds. Turn on two factor authentication while you are in there.

Then test the lock twenty times with the door wide open. Close it and run the cycle again under normal door pressure. Plenty of locks pass a single test and quit after three weeks of daily use.

A few errors show up again and again when people try installing a smart door lock themselves:
