Signs You May Need a Root Canal: Symptoms, Causes and When to See a Dentist
A toothache does not always mean you need a root canal, but persistent pain, sensitivity, or infection can indicate that the inner part of the tooth has been affected
In some cases, the discomfort may feel deep within the tooth and may not improve even after avoiding hot, cold, or sweet foods. Although toothache can have several causes, persistent or worsening pain should not be ignored.
A dentist can examine the affected tooth, assess your symptoms, and determine whether the problem is related to tooth decay, a crack, gum disease, or damage to the dental pulp. Root canal treatment may be recommended if the pulp is irreversibly inflamed or infected.
2. Sensitivity to Hot or Cold Foods and Drinks
Sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks is common and does not automatically mean you need an RCT. Mild sensitivity can occur due to exposed tooth roots, enamel wear, gum recession, or early tooth decay.
However, prolonged or intense sensitivity that continues after the source of heat or cold has been removed may indicate inflammation or damage to the dental pulp. You may notice discomfort after drinking hot tea, consuming cold water, or eating ice cream.
Dr. Divyakshi Chauhan, Dentist in Gurgaon at Miracles Healthcare says, “Sensitivity that lingers after exposure to hot or cold should not be ignored, as it may indicate deeper damage to the tooth and require timely dental evaluation.”
If sensitivity is persistent, a dental examination can help identify whether you need a desensitising treatment, a filling, or further treatment such as a root canal.
3. Pain While Chewing or Biting
Pain when biting down or chewing food can indicate a problem affecting the tooth or the surrounding tissues. It may be associated with inflammation around the tooth's root, advanced decay, a cracked tooth, or infection.
You may notice that chewing on one side of your mouth is uncomfortable or that a particular tooth hurts whenever you apply pressure. In some cases, the discomfort may continue even after you stop chewing.
Persistent pain while biting should be assessed by a dentist. Depending on the findings, treatment may involve repairing a damaged tooth, addressing the bite, treating an infection, or performing root canal treatment.
Avoid repeatedly putting pressure on a painful tooth, as this may aggravate the discomfort.
