Signs That Water May Be Getting Behind Your Shower Tiles
Water behind shower tiles can become a serious concern when it is allowed to remain unnoticed for an extended period. Unlike a visible plumbing leak, moisture beneath tiles may develop slowly and remain hidden from view. Damaged grout, deteriorating sealant, cracked tiles and waterproofing problems can all create pathways for water to enter areas that should remain dry. Recognising the warning signs early can help homeowners arrange leaky shower repair auckland services before the problem becomes more difficult and expensive to address.
Loose or Moving Shower Tiles
One of the more noticeable signs of a potential moisture problem is a loose shower tile. Tiles should remain firmly attached to the surface beneath them. If a tile moves slightly when pressed or feels different from the tiles around it, moisture may have affected the adhesive or the material underneath.
A loose tile does not automatically mean there is water behind it. Poor installation, age or movement within the building can also contribute to loose tiles. However, when movement occurs alongside cracked grout, mould or persistent dampness, it is worth having the shower inspected.
Moisture can weaken the surface beneath tiles over time. As the supporting material becomes affected, tiles may lose their original bond and begin to move. Addressing the source early can help prevent additional tiles from becoming affected.
Cracked and Deteriorating Grout
Grout is exposed to water every time a shower is used. Although quality grout can provide a durable finish, it can eventually develop cracks, gaps or areas of deterioration.
Small cracks may appear harmless, but they can provide potential entry points for moisture. This is particularly important around shower corners, floor junctions and areas where walls meet other surfaces.
Grout that is crumbling or missing in sections should also be inspected. Repeated exposure to water can gradually worsen damaged areas, especially when the underlying surface is already vulnerable.
Persistent Dark Grout Lines
Changes in grout colour can sometimes indicate that an area is holding moisture for longer than expected. Grout naturally becomes wet during showering, but it should generally dry as the bathroom conditions return to normal.
