Last week a customer called us and said, "I cleaned my kitchen the whole day, but I still found small roaches in the morning." We hear this a lot. If you are seeing tiny roaches in your house, this article is for you.
What Are Baby Cockroaches
The mother roach keeps her eggs in a small case, and she either carries it with her or leaves it in some hidden corner. One case can have 30 or 40 eggs. So when they hatch, it’s not one or two roaches, it’s a whole group.
A nymph is like a small roach with no wings. Some are light brown, some are almost black, depending on the type. They shed their skin again and again as they grow. You might find these dry, empty skins near the hiding spots. That is also a sign.
So What Does It Mean
It means they are breeding in your house. I'll be upfront about this, because many people hope it was just one roach that came in from outside. A baby roach can't travel far, so it was born close to where you found it.
Roaches mostly come out at night. If you see them in the daytime, there are usually a lot of them, and the hiding places are already full.
Does it mean your house is dirty? Not really. Roaches come in with vegetable bags, delivery boxes, and sometimes straight up through the drain. And Chennai weather helps them a lot, because it's hot and sticky almost all year.
How to Tell a Baby Roach From a Grown One
Baby | Grown-up | |
Size | A few millimetres | Much bigger |
Wings | No wings | Has wings |
Colour | Brown or almost black | Dark brown |
Hides in | Thin cracks | Wider gaps and drains |
Because they're so small, a baby roach can get through a gap you'd never even notice. So you seal everything and still find them in the morning.
Where to Look First
Take a torch and check at night, because that's when they move around. The usual places are under the kitchen sink, behind the fridge, around the gas stove, inside cabinet corners and hinges, near the drain holes, and in cardboard boxes. Bathroom pipe gaps too. Look slowly, you'll probably find more than you expected.
What You Can Do Today
Start with the kitchen. That’s where they stay the most. Wipe everything, but also clean the places you normally skip. Pull the stove a little and clean behind it, check below the sink also. Oil and food bits stuck there, that is what they eat.
Rice, sugar, atta, biscuits, all this should be kept in boxes with proper lids. A plastic cover is nothing for a roach. If you feed your dog or cat inside the house, take the bowl away at night.
Garbage should go out daily. Even if the bin is half empty, just throw it.
Check for water also. Look below the sink and near the pipes, any small leak? Roaches can stay many days without food, but not without water. So even a small drip is enough for them.
Then the gaps. Fill the small holes near the pipes and cabinets with putty or sealant. It is cheap and easy to do. Old cartons and newspaper bundles, throw them out. They hide in those and lay eggs.
Now the gel. Put small dots in the corners and along the edges, wherever you saw the roaches. They eat it and go back to their place, and the others get it from them. Don’t expect anything on the first day. Give it some days.
You can keep glue traps along the wall also. These will not clear everything. But you will know which corner has more roaches, so you can put the gel there.
Why Spraying Everywhere Doesn’t Work
Many people take a spray and spray the whole kitchen. It’s natural, you want them gone fast. But the roaches just go inside the wall. After some days they come back, maybe in another room. It looks like it worked, but no.
Why Gel Is Used More Now
