Reciprocating Air Compressor: Working Principle, Types & Industrial Applications

Learn the working principle, types, benefits and industrial applications of a reciprocating air compressor, with tips on maintenance and air treatment.

3. Discharge Stroke

When the cylinder pressure exceeds the pressure in the discharge line, the discharge valve opens. The compressed air flows into the delivery pipe or receiver tank.

4. Air Storage and Distribution

The compressed air is stored in a receiver tank or supplied to the connected pneumatic equipment. Depending on the application, additional treatment equipment may be required to remove moisture, oil aerosols, and particulate contamination.

These stages repeat continuously while the compressor operates, providing compressed air at the required operating pressure.

Types of Reciprocating Air Compressors

Reciprocating compressors are available in several configurations. Choosing the appropriate type depends on pressure requirements, air consumption, operating hours, and the working environment.

1. Single-Stage Reciprocating Air Compressor

A single-stage compressor compresses air in one cylinder stage before delivering it to the receiver. It is commonly used for lower-pressure applications, small workshops, pneumatic tools, and general maintenance activities.

Its relatively straightforward construction can make installation and routine maintenance easier.

2. Two-Stage Reciprocating Air Compressor

A two-stage compressor compresses air in two stages. Air is first compressed in a low-pressure cylinder and then passed through an intercooler before entering the high-pressure cylinder.
