Pumas vs Cruz Azul: A Rivalry That Feels Like a Clásico

Is it really a Clásico?

Honestly, it depends who you ask. By tradition, it isn’t one. It lacks the national weight of the América matchups, and even supporters of both clubs would probably admit that. It also has a social-class story that gives it extra flavor: Cruz Azul was born from a cement cooperative and has working-class roots, while Pumas is the university club, young and academic.

But rivalries aren’t made of tradition alone. They’re made of nights like Sunday: late goals, bad blood and nobody willing to back down. Both fanbases care about this game more than most league fixtures, and that’s the part that counts.

What comes next

The point helps neither side as much as they’d like. Cruz Azul needs to tighten up if it wants to climb the table and defend its title, and Huiqui clearly knows it. Pumas have a lot to be proud of in how they fought, but they’re still stuck in the lower half of the standings and need wins, not moral victories.

Whenever these two meet again, expect the same thing: tension, noise and a result that probably won’t settle anything. So call it a Clásico or don’t. When Pumas and Cruz Azul play, nobody in Mexico City is looking away.
