PU Injection Grouting for Concrete Leakage

PU Injection Grouting for Concrete Leakage

PU injection grouting is a specialised technique for treating active water leakage through cracks, joints, voids, and other concrete defects.

PU injection grouting is a specialised form of polyurethane grouting in which PU resin is injected into cracks, joints, voids, or other leakage paths using injection equipment and packers. The process is generally selected when water is entering through concrete and the leakage needs to be controlled from within the structure. The resin travels through the affected path before reacting and forming a flexible or expanded seal.

The method is commonly considered for leaking basements, underground structures, retaining walls, water tanks, tunnels, lift pits, parking structures, concrete slabs, construction joints, and similar areas. Depending on the selected resin, the cured material may provide flexibility, water resistance, and adhesion to the surrounding substrate. Material selection should always be based on the specific defect, moisture condition, and required performance.

How Does PU Injection Grouting Work?

The first stage is a detailed inspection of the affected concrete surface. Engineers identify visible cracks, damp areas, water outlets, construction joints, honeycombing, and other potential leakage locations. The inspection should also consider whether the crack is active, dormant, structural, or non-structural. Understanding the leakage pattern helps determine where injection packers should be positioned and which material is appropriate for the treatment.

After identifying the leakage path, holes are drilled at suitable intervals along the crack or affected area. Injection packers are then installed and secured inside these holes. PU resin is subsequently pumped through the packers using suitable injection equipment. Under controlled pressure, the material follows available internal paths, reacts with moisture where applicable, expands or cures, and seals the leakage route. Packers are later removed or treated according to the repair specification.

Where Is PU Grouting Used?

PU grouting has applications across several types of concrete and masonry structures where water ingress or internal voids require treatment. Common locations include basements, underground parking areas, retaining walls, tunnels, water tanks, reservoirs, lift pits, construction joints, concrete slabs, manholes, and other below-ground structures. The technique can also be considered for difficult leakage conditions where conventional surface waterproofing cannot reach the actual water pathway.

Industrial and infrastructure structures can face particularly demanding repair conditions because shutting down operations may be difficult. PU injection grouting can offer a targeted intervention with relatively limited surface disruption compared with major demolition or replacement work. However, the method should be selected after evaluating the structure, leakage mechanism, substrate condition, and expected movement rather than treating every crack or leak with polyurethane injection.

PU Grouting for Water Leakage

Water leakage through concrete can originate from construction joints, shrinkage cracks, honeycombing, pipe penetrations, expansion joints, or concealed internal voids. When leakage continues despite surface treatment, it is important to investigate where water is actually travelling. PU grouting can address these internal pathways by injecting resin directly into the affected zone, allowing the material to react and form a seal where conventional coating may not penetrate.

This makes PU injection grouting especially useful for deep-path leakage sealing, where the visible wet patch may not represent the actual source of water ingress. The objective is to intercept the pathway rather than merely conceal the surface symptom. Depending on the material and site condition, polyurethane systems can remain flexible after curing, helping accommodate minor movement within the treated area.
