Usually, PGT-A is an additional expense rather than part of the basic IVF cycle.

How Accurate Is PGT-A?

PGT-A accuracy is one of the most misunderstood parts of the process.

PGT-A can provide useful information about chromosome copy number, particularly when modern laboratory methods such as NGS are used. However, the test is not 100% accurate and cannot guarantee that an embryo will implant, result in a healthy pregnancy, or produce a healthy baby.

ASRM highlights an important biological limitation: the laboratory usually tests cells taken from the embryo's trophectoderm, not every cell that will eventually make up the developing pregnancy. Therefore, the biopsy sample may not perfectly represent the entire embryo.

Why can PGT-A produce an uncertain result?

Embryos can contain different cell populations.

This phenomenon is called mosaicism.

For example, the cells sampled during biopsy might contain a mixture of chromosome patterns. The result may therefore be reported as mosaic or intermediate rather than clearly euploid or aneuploid.

ASRM notes that intermediate results can also be influenced by factors such as amplification bias, statistical variation, contamination, biopsy technique and laboratory conditions.

This is why a mosaic result should not automatically be interpreted as meaning that an embryo can never produce a healthy pregnancy.
