Perfume Shelf Life Explained: How Long Does Fragrance Really Last Before It Expires?

Learn how long perfume lasts, what causes fragrance to expire, signs of degradation, and the best ways to store perfume for longer-lasting quality.

What Are the Signs That Perfume Has Changed?

You don't necessarily need to rely on an expiration date. Your senses can provide useful clues.

1. The Smell Has Changed

If a fragrance suddenly smells very different from how you remember it, oxidation or degradation may have occurred.

2. The Opening Feels Sharper

A fragrance may develop a harsh, sour, or unusually alcoholic opening.

3. The Dry-Down Is Different

The base may feel flatter, weaker, or noticeably different.

4. Significant Color Change

Some fragrances naturally become darker over time, especially formulas containing certain ingredients. However, a dramatic color change combined with an unpleasant smell can indicate that the fragrance has changed significantly.

5. Performance Has Changed

If a fragrance that previously lasted for hours suddenly disappears much faster, its formula may have degraded or your skin, climate, or application conditions may simply be different. Performance alone isn't enough to determine whether a perfume has gone bad.

This makes bifold doors a useful choice for modern Singapore homes, apartments and renovation projects.
