Pain After Knee Replacement Surgery

Pain After Knee Replacement Surgery

First Few Days

The first several days can be uncomfortable because the surgical site is healing and swelling is usually present.

Pain medication prescribed by the surgical team can help manage discomfort. Early movement and physiotherapy may also begin during this period.

At Bharath Orthopaedics, patients following the SMART fast-track recovery protocol are generally encouraged to begin walking with physiotherapy support within hours of surgery when medically appropriate.

First Two Weeks

Pain and swelling can still be noticeable during the first two weeks. Walking, exercises, and changes in position may temporarily increase discomfort.

Patients are generally encouraged to walk short distances regularly rather than remaining inactive for prolonged periods.

Prescribed exercises may include:

  • Ankle pumps
  • Heel slides
  • Quadriceps exercises
  • Straight-leg raises
  • Gentle knee movement

Following the rehabilitation plan helps restore movement and strength.

Weeks 3 to 6

During this stage, many patients become more independent and gradually require less pain medication.
