Ohio Electricity Rates: How to Compare Suppliers, Plans and Real Energy Costs

Ohio Electricity Rates: How to Compare Suppliers, Plans and Real Energy Costs

$8 × 12 = $96

If leaving the contract early costs $150, the cancellation charge could wipe out much of the expected benefit.

A low electricity rate should therefore always be evaluated together with the contract's flexibility.

Don't Ignore the Contract Length

A short-term electricity plan and a long-term plan serve different goals.

Consider:

Plan A: 9.50¢/kWh for 3 months

Plan B: 10.25¢/kWh for 24 months

Plan A is clearly cheaper today.

But after three months, the customer must shop again.

If electricity prices increase, the next available plan might cost substantially more.

Plan B costs more immediately but offers greater rate stability.

Neither is automatically better.

Consumers should decide whether their priority is the lowest current rate, longer-term predictability or a balance between the two.

Watch for Introductory Prices

Some Ohio electricity suppliers may offer introductory pricing.

For example:

First month: 7.99¢/kWh

Following months: variable rate

The first-month price can make the plan appear extremely competitive.

But the meaningful comparison should cover the entire expected relationship with the supplier.

Before choosing an introductory offer, check:

  1. How long the promotional rate lasts.
  2. What pricing applies afterward.
  3. Whether the plan becomes variable.
  4. Whether monthly fees apply.
  5. Whether cancellation is permitted without penalty.

A promotional price should never be treated as the permanent electricity rate unless the contract specifically says so.
