Ohio Electricity Rates: How to Compare Suppliers, Plans and Real Energy Costs
Suppose your utility Price to Compare is 10.97¢ per kWh.
A supplier advertises:
9.49¢ per kWh
That appears significantly cheaper.
At 1,000 kWh of monthly usage:
Utility benchmark:
1,000 × $0.1097 = $109.70
Supplier:
1,000 × $0.0949 = $94.90
The apparent difference is:
$14.80 per month
But suppose the competitive plan also charges a $14.95 monthly supplier fee.
The supplier's actual estimated supply cost becomes:
$94.90 + $14.95 = $109.85
Despite advertising a rate almost 1.5 cents below the utility benchmark, the supplier would actually be slightly more expensive at this usage level.
That is why consumers should evaluate effective electricity cost, not just cents per kWh.
Calculate Your Real Electricity Cost
A simple formula is:
Estimated supply cost = kWh usage × supply rate + recurring supplier fees
If a plan includes applicable credits, those should also be included.
For example:
Supplier rate: 9.99¢/kWh
Usage: 1,200 kWh
Monthly fee: $9.95
Electricity supply:
1,200 × $0.0999 = $119.88
