Library Priorities Are Changing—Creating New Intent Opportunities

Current library research provides useful context for determining which intent topics may matter.

Ithaka S+R's 2025 US Library Survey, published in May 2026, found that academic library leaders are operating under continued financial and staffing constraints. The survey also found that AI is reshaping library priorities, although adoption remains uneven.

The research identified several particularly important areas.

AI literacy is becoming a significant priority. Seventy-two percent of library leaders rated supporting students' AI literacy skills as highly important. In addition, 83% anticipated increased demand for AI literacy instruction over the following three years.

AI adoption is already occurring in specific library functions. Forty percent of surveyed library leaders reported using AI in discovery and access, while 29% reported AI use in research support services and 26% in internal data analysis.

Privacy is becoming increasingly important. Half of library leaders expressed concern about third-party access to individual-level data, the highest level recorded since the survey began asking the question in 2019.

These findings offer practical intent categories for campaigns. A vendor selling AI-related library solutions, for example, could monitor accounts researching AI discovery, information literacy, research integrity, metadata, or library automation.
