Mental Health Advocacy in India: How Everyday People Are Breaking the Stigma

Mental Health Advocacy in India: How Everyday People Are Breaking the Stigma

Everyday Indians are helping change conversations around mental health through awareness, open dialogue, support, and community action.

India's mental health conversation is slowly changing.

There is growing awareness about:

  • Therapy.
  • Emotional wellbeing.
  • Workplace burnout.
  • Student stress.
  • Depression.
  • Anxiety.
  • The importance of seeking help.

The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 also gave greater legal recognition to mental healthcare and the rights of people with mental illness.

However, laws and policies alone cannot completely remove stigma.

Real change happens when everyday attitudes begin to change.

That happens through conversations:

  • At home.
  • In schools.
  • In colleges.
  • At workplaces.
  • Among friends.
  • On social media.
  • In communities.

Mental health advocacy does not always have to be loud or public.

Sometimes it is a social media post.

Sometimes it is supporting a friend.

Sometimes it is correcting a harmful comment.
