Life After Knee Replacement Surgery
First Few Days
During the first few days, the focus is on getting out of bed safely, beginning gentle exercises, controlling pain, and learning to walk with a walker or other support.
Physiotherapy may begin soon after surgery when medically appropriate.
Simple exercises can help maintain circulation and begin activating the muscles around the knee.
Weeks 1 to 2
During the first two weeks at home, patients generally continue walking short distances several times a day and performing their prescribed exercises.
Swelling and discomfort are common during this stage. Elevating the leg and using ice as instructed can help manage swelling.
The surgical wound should also be monitored carefully.
Weeks 3 to 6
During this period, walking usually becomes easier and patients gradually become more independent.
Physiotherapy focuses on improving:
- Knee bending
- Leg strength
- Balance
- Walking pattern
- Ability to climb stairs
- Independence with daily activities
