Astigmatism

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea or another part of the eye has an irregular curvature. This can result in blurred or distorted vision.

LASIK can correct certain types and degrees of astigmatism by reshaping the cornea.

How Is LASIK Surgery Performed?

LASIK is generally performed as an outpatient procedure.

Before the procedure begins, numbing eye drops are applied to reduce discomfort. The eye is positioned carefully so that the laser can deliver the planned treatment accurately.

A thin corneal flap is created and gently moved aside. The underlying corneal tissue is then reshaped using a specialized laser. The amount and pattern of reshaping are determined using measurements taken during the pre-operative examination.

Once the corneal reshaping is completed, the flap is repositioned.

The procedure itself is generally short, although the total appointment can take longer because it includes preparation, treatment, observation, and post-operative instructions.

What Does LASIK Feel Like?

Because numbing eye drops are used, most people do not experience significant pain during the procedure.
