ISSN Registration: Online Process, Fees, Eligibility & Requirements

ISSN Registration: Online Process, Fees, Eligibility & Requirements

How to Apply for an ISSN?

The application route depends on the country of publication and the responsible ISSN centre. The general process starts with identifying the correct centre and preparing the publication information.

Step 1: Identify the Publication Type

First determine whether the publication is a journal, magazine, periodical, electronic journal or another continuing resource.

This matters because ISSN is designed for serial and continuing resources rather than ordinary one-time publications.

Step 2: Confirm the Country of Publication

The publisher should identify where the publication is issued. The ISSN system uses the country of publication to determine the responsible National Centre where one exists.

For Indian publishers, this means checking the process applicable through the Indian ISSN National Centre.

Step 3: Prepare Publication Details

Before applying, ensure that the title, publisher details and publication information are consistent.

For an online publication, the relevant URL and publisher information should be available. For a print publication, the applicable sample pages and publication details should be prepared.

Step 4: Submit the Application Through the Applicable ISSN Channel
