HPV Testing and Pap Test Market

HPV Testing and Pap Test Market

HPV Testing and Pap Test Market Set for Strong Growth Through 2034

In the United States, the American Cancer Society estimates approximately 13,490 new cases of invasive cervical cancer and 4,200 deaths from cervical cancer in 2026. Continued screening, improved diagnostic access, and product innovation therefore remain important components of cervical cancer prevention strategies.

At the same time, emerging markets are becoming increasingly important. Population-based screening programs, NGO-led awareness initiatives, HPV vaccination campaigns, and self-sampling approaches are helping address geographical and accessibility barriers.

Pap Testing Maintains a Strong Position

Despite the growing adoption of molecular HPV testing, Pap testing continues to represent a significant portion of the market. DelveInsight estimates that the Pap test segment accounted for approximately 63% of market revenue in 2025. Its long-standing clinical acceptance, affordability, and established role in cervical cancer prevention contribute to continued demand.

Pap testing is particularly relevant in settings where sophisticated molecular diagnostic infrastructure may not be readily available. The development of liquid-based cytology has also enhanced sample quality and diagnostic performance, supporting continued utilization.

Pap testing remains important in co-testing and follow-up pathways. As more women undergo HPV-based screening, abnormal or positive findings can generate additional demand for cytological evaluation and other diagnostic procedures. Consequently, the transition toward HPV-based primary screening does not necessarily eliminate the role of Pap testing; instead, it can reposition cytology within broader diagnostic algorithms.

Consumables Create Recurring Revenue Opportunities

The consumables category is another major contributor to market expansion. According to DelveInsight, consumables are expected to represent around 63% of the market in 2025. Reagents, assay kits, collection media, swabs, cytology slides, staining solutions, preservation vials, and other supplies are required repeatedly during screening workflows, generating recurring demand.

The increasing adoption of molecular HPV testing is particularly supportive of demand for high-risk HPV assay kits and associated laboratory consumables. Self-sampling technologies are also creating opportunities for collection devices and sample-transport products.

Recent industry developments demonstrate this trend. Roche received expanded regulatory approvals for its cobas HPV test in multiple regions, while Hologic introduced enhancements to its ThinPrep Pap Test ecosystem. BD also expanded availability of its Onclarity HPV Assay in additional international markets. Such developments can increase testing capacity while strengthening demand for proprietary consumable ecosystems.

Follow-Up Testing and Hospital-Based Screening Drive Demand

By application, follow-up testing is expected to maintain a dominant position because abnormal screening results often require additional diagnostic assessment. Patients with positive HPV results or abnormal Pap findings may undergo repeat cytology, HPV genotyping, colposcopy, or biopsy.
