How Weather Uncertainty Can Complicate Fertilizer Purchasing Plans
Fertilizer markets followed different paths during September 2026 as seasonal demand competed with available inventories and production costs.
When More Supply Does Not Mean Lower Costs Everywhere
Fertilizer markets rarely move in one direction for long. A product can face growing inventories in one country while another region prepares for large imports. Feedstock costs can support producer offers even as buyers resist higher prices, and seasonal demand can encourage procurement without indicating that farm consumption is improving.

September 2026 illustrated these competing forces. Chinese urea prices lost momentum as production recovered and agricultural purchasing remained subdued. Standard ammonium sulphate strengthened as export availability tightened, while Chinese monoammonium phosphate (MAP) weakened amid limited fresh orders and softer sulphur prices. Potash markets also diverged: Chinese muriate of potash (MOP) recovered from early weakness but remained constrained by high port inventories, while U.S. retail MAP and potash prices edged above their month-earlier levels.
For procurement teams, the central question was not simply whether fertilizer prices were rising or falling. It was whether the movement reflected a temporary inventory adjustment, a change in purchasing demand, or a longer-term shift in supply availability. September's developments highlight why fertilizer pricing intelligence needs to connect these factors rather than treat each price movement in isolation.
Three Market Signals That Explain September's Price Divergence
1. Production recovery put pressure on Chinese urea
China's urea market demonstrated how additional production can limit price recovery even when seasonal requirements are approaching. As plants resumed operations, daily output returned to around 200,000 tons by September 22. High inventories, limited agricultural stockpiling, and subdued buying from compound-fertilizer manufacturers restricted the support available to prices.
The timing of demand also mattered. The completion of summer top-dressing reduced immediate nitrogen requirements, while autumn wheat base-fertilizer demand favored phosphorus more strongly than urea. Earlier export commitments had helped absorb domestic material, but their influence weakened as the shipment window approached its end.
2. Phosphate pricing exposed the limits of feedstock support
Chinese fertilizer-grade MAP faced a different challenge: the combination of cautious purchasing and weaker cost support. Compound-fertilizer manufacturers continued using previously purchased raw materials, reducing the need for fresh orders. As new buying remained limited, traders lowered offers.
In Hubei, the assessment for 55% powdered MAP fell from RMB 4,310 per ton on September 1 to RMB 4,070 per ton on September 16. Softer sulphur prices reduced one source of support for selling prices, although feedstock expenses continued to influence producer margins.
