How to Write a Thesis Statement: A Student's Guide with Examples

The question should match the assignment. An argumentative paper may require a debatable question, while an informative paper may focus on explaining a process or relationship.

Step 4: Develop a Preliminary Answer

After reviewing some relevant information, write a tentative answer to your research question.

For example:

Research question: How can recorded lectures affect university students' study habits?

Preliminary answer: Recorded lectures can help students review difficult concepts at their own pace, but they may also encourage postponing study sessions when students lack a consistent schedule.

This answer identifies a position that can be explored through research and analysis.

A preliminary thesis is not permanent. You can refine it as you discover more evidence.

Step 5: Make Your Thesis Specific and Defensible

A useful argumentative thesis should make a claim that requires explanation or evidence. It should not simply announce a topic or state something obvious.

Consider these examples:

Too broad: Technology is important in education.

More focused: Digital learning platforms can support independent study when they provide accessible course materials, meaningful feedback, and opportunities for students to practise new concepts.

The second statement gives the essay a more precise direction and identifies several ideas to investigate.

A defensible thesis does not have to be controversial. It needs to present a meaningful claim or interpretation that can be supported within the scope of the assignment.

Step 6: Identify Your Main Supporting Points

Think about the reasons, examples, or evidence you will use to develop your argument.

For example:

Thesis: Universities should provide structured guidance on academic AI use because students need clear expectations, reliable ways to verify information, and opportunities to practise independent reasoning.

Possible supporting sections:

  1. Why students need clear rules for AI-assisted coursework.
  2. Why AI-generated information should be verified.
  3. How independent problem-solving supports learning.

These points give the essay a logical structure. As you research, revise the points if the evidence suggests a better organization.

Step 7: Refine Your Wording

Your final thesis should communicate the main idea directly. Remove unnecessary phrases, vague expressions, and claims that extend beyond what your essay can support.
