Build a Better Literature Search

Searching for literature is not simply about finding as many papers as possible.

Start by identifying alternative terms for the concepts in your question.

For an assignment about online learning, for example, your searches might include:

• "online learning" AND "higher education"
• "digital learning" AND undergraduates
• "online education" AND "academic achievement"
• "virtual learning" AND university students

You can then combine related terms using OR:

("online learning" OR "digital learning") AND ("higher education" OR university)

Use your university library databases where possible, particularly when you need peer-reviewed journal literature.

Keep Track of What You Find

Create a simple research log as you work.

Record:

• the database you searched
• your search terms
• useful articles

It also reduces the temptation to cite something simply because you remember seeing it somewhere.

Don't Treat Every Source as Equally Reliable

One of the easiest ways to improve a literature review is to become more selective about your evidence.

When you find a potentially useful paper, don't immediately copy its conclusion into your notes.
