How to Load and Use a Tape Gun: Step-by-Step Guide

A tape gun is the busiest tool on any packing bench, and when it is loaded correctly, it seals a carton in one clean motion. Load it the wrong way, and you get tape sticking to the roller, jammed rolls, crooked seals and lost time on a line that should be moving. This guide walks your team through loading a hand-held carton sealing dispenser the right way, using it for a secure seal, and fixing the common problems, so every operator gets a consistent result.

Know the Parts of a Tape Gun

A hand-held tape gun has a few key parts, and knowing them makes loading straightforward:

• Roll holder (spindle): the round core the tape roll sits on and spins from.
• Guide roller: the rubber roller that presses the tape onto the carton.
• Tension knob: sits in the centre of the roll holder and controls how freely the roll spins.
• Metal gate: the sprung bar the tape threads under on its way to the roller.
• Cutting blade: the serrated edge that cuts the tape at the end of a seal.

What You Need Before You Start

You need the tape gun and a roll of carton sealing tape in a width that matches the dispenser, commonly 48mm on a 75mm core. Check the roll width against the gun before loading, because a roll that is too wide will not seat correctly. How to Load a Tape Gun: 6 Steps

Step 1: Check the dispenser and tape
Make sure the blade is sharp and clear of old adhesive, and that the roll width matches the gun. A clean dispenser and a sharp blade prevent most feeding problems before they start.

Step 2: Fit the roll, sticky side down
Push the roll onto the roll holder so it unwinds from underneath, with the adhesive side facing down towards the carton. This is the single most common mistake, so check the sticky side faces down before you thread it. Seat the roll firmly so it spins freely.

Step 3: Thread the tape under the gate and over the roller
Pull about 10 to 12cm of tape off the roll. Hold back the metal gate with your fingers, pass the tape under the gate and up over the rubber guide roller, keeping the sticky side down. Take your time here to keep the tape straight and stop it jamming.

Step 4: Draw the tape across the cutting blade
Pull the threaded tape forward past the serrated blade so a short lead length sits ready to apply. Keep fingers clear of the blade, which is sharp.
