The discharge outlet can now be connected to the distribution line. All piping connections should be properly aligned and secured.

Before completing the backfill, inspect the area underneath the discharge line. Proper support beneath the pipe is important because poorly supported piping can settle after the excavation is filled. Ground movement can place stress on the pipe and its connections.

Use suitable fill material and compact the area as required by the project specifications and local requirements.

An electrical conduit can also be installed during this stage. The conduit provides a protected route for the electrical wiring associated with the submersible pump.

Installing the Submersible Pump

After the pitless unit and discharge system are prepared, the submersible pump can be installed.

Electrical connections require particular attention. Waterproof splices are commonly required for submersible pump motor leads. The correct splice method should always be selected according to the motor manufacturer's instructions and the electrical requirements for the installation.

The submersible pump can then be connected to the drop pipe. When connecting the pump and motor assembly, make sure the motor shaft and coupling are properly aligned.

In some pump configurations, the motor shaft needs to be rotated slightly so that the coupling splines engage correctly. Once the components are aligned, install and tighten the bolts evenly. A criss-cross tightening pattern can help distribute pressure across the connection.

Using a Flow Sleeve

Some well installations require a flow sleeve around the pump motor. The purpose of a flow sleeve is to direct water movement around the motor and increase the water velocity passing over it.

Large-diameter well casings can have a significant amount of space around the pump. Without an appropriate flow arrangement, the natural water movement around the motor may not provide the desired cooling conditions.
