How to Find the Best Natural Holistic Dog Food for Your Pup

Words such as “natural,” “premium,” “healthy,” and “holistic” can sound reassuring, but they should not be the only factors behind your decision.

A product can have attractive packaging and appealing claims while still not being the best match for your dog.

Instead, pay attention to:

• The intended life stage of the food
• The nutritional adequacy statement
• Main protein sources
• Calorie content
• Fat and fiber levels
• Ingredient quality
• Feeding instructions
• Your dog’s individual response to the food

A reputable manufacturer should also provide clear information about the product and its intended use.

Consider Your Dog’s Digestion

Digestive health is another important consideration when selecting natural holistic dog food. Some dogs have sensitive stomachs and may experience loose stools, gas, vomiting, or other digestive problems when their diet changes too quickly.

If you switch foods, make the transition gradually. Mixing a small amount of the new food with the existing food and increasing the new food over several days can help some dogs adjust more comfortably.

However, dogs respond differently to dietary changes. If your dog has persistent digestive problems, speak with a veterinarian rather than repeatedly changing foods without professional guidance.

Choose Appropriate Treats Alongside a Balanced Diet

Dog food provides the foundation of your pet’s nutrition, while treats should generally remain a smaller part of the overall diet. Choosing appropriate treats can help you reward your dog without unnecessarily disrupting a balanced feeding routine.

This is where brands such as Ugly Chews focus on providing natural, long-lasting chewing options. Ugly Chews creates handmade chews using thoughtfully sourced ingredients, with an emphasis on sustainability and reducing waste.

Chewing can also provide dogs with an enjoyable activity. However, pet parents should always select a chew appropriate for their dog’s size, chewing habits, and age. Dogs should be supervised while chewing, and any chew that becomes small enough to swallow should be removed.

Think About Where Ingredients Come From

Ingredient sourcing can matter to pet owners who want to make more responsible purchasing decisions. Sustainable sourcing and reducing waste can be meaningful parts of a pet product’s overall story.

Ugly Chews began with a goal of reducing waste in rural communities and turning leftovers into useful products for dogs. Its approach demonstrates how pet products can combine functionality with more responsible sourcing practices.

While sustainability does not automatically determine whether a food is nutritionally complete, it can be an additional factor when comparing brands and products.

Check Whether the Food Is Complete and Balanced

Perhaps the most important factor when selecting your dog’s main food is whether it is intended to provide complete and balanced nutrition for the appropriate life stage.

Treats, chews, toppers, and supplements are not necessarily designed to replace a complete dog food. They should be used according to their intended purpose.

If you are considering a particular natural holistic dog food, check the product packaging for information about its nutritional adequacy and intended life stage. When in doubt, ask your veterinarian whether the food is suitable for your dog.

Be Careful With Homemade Diets

Some pet owners choose to prepare food at home because they want greater control over the ingredients. However, creating a nutritionally complete homemade diet can be more complicated than simply combining meat, vegetables, grains, or other foods.

Dogs need specific nutrients in appropriate amounts and ratios. A homemade diet that appears healthy may still lack important vitamins or minerals.
