How to Find Reliable Sources for CIPD Assignments

How to Find Reliable Sources for CIPD Assignments

For workplace rights and employment-practice information, Acas is another useful authoritative source.

This becomes particularly important when your assignment discusses employment law because legislation and workplace requirements can change. Never assume that an old HR article still describes the current legal position.

Professional and industry organisations

Professional bodies and established organisations can provide useful information about current practice, industry trends and professional standards.

However, always consider the purpose of the publication. A professional survey can be useful evidence about practitioner opinions, but it does not automatically establish a cause-and-effect relationship.

Don't Treat Every Business Report as Independent Research

Consultancy reports can be useful. So can reports from recruitment companies, HR technology providers and other commercial organisations.

I would not automatically reject them.

I would, however, investigate them before relying on their conclusions.

Ask who funded the research and whether the organisation selling a particular service has an interest in the findings.

For example, if a software company publishes research showing that companies using its category of software achieve better employee outcomes, that information may be interesting. But I would want to know how the sample was selected, what comparison group was used and whether independent researchers were involved.

The source may still have value. You simply need to understand what kind of evidence it provides.

Check the Date Before Using Information

Currency matters, but it does not mean that every source must be recent.

Some foundational theories remain relevant for many years. An original theoretical paper may be more important than a recent blog post explaining the same theory.

Other information has a much shorter shelf life.

Employment statistics, legislation, workplace regulations, salary information and current HR trends can change quickly.

This is particularly relevant in 2026. CIPD's current evidence-based practice guidance, for example, was updated in July 2026 and highlights the importance of checking the relevance and trustworthiness of evidence rather than relying on outdated assumptions or superficial solutions.

So ask yourself:

“Does this source need to be current for the claim I am making?”

If the answer is yes, prioritise recent and authoritative material.

Search for Evidence That Disagrees With You

This is one research habit that can make a noticeable difference to the quality of your assignment.

Once you think you know the answer, deliberately search for evidence that challenges it.
