How to Choose the Right Encapsulation Manufacturer

How to Choose the Right Encapsulation Manufacturer

Brands considering private label encapsulation should determine exactly what "private label" means to the manufacturer.

There are several models.

A manufacturer may offer ready-made formulas that multiple brands can sell under their own labels. Others provide semi-custom formulas where clients can modify selected ingredients, dosages, flavors, or packaging. Fully custom manufacturing involves developing a formula specifically for the client.

Ask what level of customization is actually available.

Also determine whether the manufacturer can support:

  • Formula development
  • Label coordination
  • Bottling
  • Packaging
  • Lot coding
  • Shipping cartons
  • Product documentation
  • Inventory planning
  • Fulfillment

Private label manufacturing can simplify product launches, but only when responsibilities are clearly defined from the beginning.

7. Investigate Minimum Order Quantities

Minimum order quantity, or MOQ, can have a major impact on cash flow.

A very high MOQ may create unnecessary inventory risk for a new product. A very low MOQ may result in significantly higher per-unit costs.

Ask manufacturers about:

  • Minimum capsule quantities
  • Minimum finished-product quantities
  • Pilot or trial batches
  • Pricing at different volumes
  • Packaging minimums
  • Reorder minimums
  • Ingredient purchasing requirements

Do not evaluate the MOQ alone.

Consider how it fits into expected demand, product shelf life, warehouse capacity, launch strategy, and working capital.

The cheapest unit price does not necessarily create the lowest business risk.

8. Confirm the Manufacturer Can Scale With You

A manufacturer may be perfect for your first 5,000 bottles but unable to support significantly larger orders later.

Discuss production capacity before your brand grows.

Ask questions such as:

  • What is your normal production capacity?
  • How do you handle sudden increases in demand?
  • How far in advance must production be scheduled?
  • Can you support multiple SKUs?
  • What happens when an ingredient becomes unavailable?
  • How do lead times change for larger orders?

You want an encapsulation manufacturer that fits your current needs without becoming a bottleneck as order volume increases.

Scalability is especially important for companies building multiple products under a private-label or custom supplement brand.

9. Examine Lead Times and Supply Chain Management

Manufacturing delays can create lost sales, stockouts, and frustrated customers.
